Hooray for the Utah Jazz! Tonight we beat out the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs – for the 2nd year in a row! It was an awesome, blowout game at the Delta Center in Salt Lake (yes, I know the name of the arena has changed, but it will always be the Delta Center to me). Now they’re advancing to the 2nd round, competing against the Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. Good luck, Jazz!

I love cooking. I think I’ve loved it ever since I was little and learned to make the best homemade macaroni and cheese in the world with my sister Emily. However, since I was a fairly picky eater growing up, I had a very limited selection of dishes I knew how to make (because, frankly, how silly would it be to cook something I didn’t like?). Going on a mission and getting married did a lot for expanding my culinary horizons, but I think my confidence in experimentation has mostly come from my favorite TV show (really, the only one I watch regularly): “Good Eats.”

“Good Eats” is hosted by Alton Brown – the Bill Nye of the culinary world. It’s all about the science behind cooking, the history of various foods, safety and hardware in the kitchen, and learning methods rather than just recipes. Lots of puns and visual aids make it extra entertaining. Watching this show inspired Jim to try making homemade jam… and now we never buy store-bought because making our own is both cheaper and tastier. When we can find flank steak for a good price, we make Good Eats beef jerky on our homemade drying rig (rather than a dehydrator), which tastes fantastic with no scary chemical preservatives. Even my baked potatoes will never be the same since applying tips from Alton Brown.

Anyway, just to experiment, I’m going to try embedding a video of the Good Eats theme song right in my post. Enjoy!

How ’bout them Jazz?by Angie

WOW! Jim and I just finished watching tonight’s Jazz game: Jazz vs. Lakers at Salt Lake City. It was absolutely fantastic! With two of our starters in street clothes because of injuries, and one of our players making his NBA debut (called up from the D-league), we scored 70 points in the first half! We were afraid the Lakers were biding their time for a big come-back, but the Jazz continued to outscore them with fantastic offense. Final score was 120 to 96! We totally schooled them!

I’d love to do a whole play-by-play, because it was such an amazing game, but I’m sure I couldn’t do it justice. Hey, we have it recorded, if anyone missed it!

JaquieLast night, Jim & I were curled up on the couch watching the Jazz game (which we won!). Jaquie was curled up in Jim’s lap, half asleep. I suddenly noticed one of those annoying, tiny black bugs flying around above the couch, so I said, “Jaquie, look! A bug!”

She didn’t seem to care, and didn’t move at all. Unfortunately, the little fly chose that moment to zoom down near her, and buzz around near her whiskers, where she couldn’t help but notice him. She opened her eyes wide and stared at it for just a second, then… SNAP. She ate him.

It was so sudden and bizarre – Jim and I laughed until I had to wipe away tears. For those of you who have seen “Enchanted,” it reminded me of the end of “Happy Working Song.” Jaquie jumped down from the couch, apparently offended that we were laughing at her slick catch. I have to remind myself that she was born feral: she spent the first year of her life living on the street, where she probably ate bugs all the time. Who knows…maybe they’re delicious.
