{"id":542,"date":"2008-10-11T17:03:21","date_gmt":"2008-10-12T00:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.angieandjim.com\/blog\/?p=542"},"modified":"2008-10-12T10:15:13","modified_gmt":"2008-10-12T17:15:13","slug":"what-is-so-important-about-proposition-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.angieandjim.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/11\/what-is-so-important-about-proposition-8\/","title":{"rendered":"What is so important about Proposition 8?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This November, California is voting on a ballot measure that proposes to amend our state constitution to read, &#8220;Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.&#8221;  Voting &#8220;Yes&#8221; on Proposition 8 would establish this amendment as law.\u00a0 So, what is the big deal?\u00a0  Well, there are lots of issues involved &#8211; it&#8217;s not just about &#8220;same-sex marriage&#8221; or even <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.lds.org\/ldsnewsroom\/eng\/public-issues\/same-gender-attraction\" target=\"_blank\">homosexuality<\/a>.  The outcome of this ballot measure will have a huge impact on the future of California, and on the nation:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Education<\/strong>:\u00a0 Children receive various levels of &#8220;age appropriate&#8221; sex education throughout their K-12 years.\u00a0 If Proposition 8 fails, this education would necessarily include homosexuality and &#8220;same-sex marriage,&#8221; and would be required to give equal honor and encouragement to these kind of unions as to traditional marriage.\u00a0 There would be no requirement for parental notification or opting-out.\u00a0 This has <a href=\"http:\/\/link.brightcove.com\/services\/player\/bcpid1815820715?bctid=1822459319\" target=\"_blank\">already happened in Massachusetts<\/a> (where &#8220;same-sex marriages&#8221; are legal) and, to some degree, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2008\/10\/11\/MNFG13F1VG.DTL&amp;hw=wedding&amp;sn=002&amp;sc=496\" target=\"_blank\">in California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Religious\/Moral Liberties<\/strong>:\u00a0 The tolerance being demanded by Gay Rights Activists is only one-way: a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lds.org\/ldsnewsroom\/media\/mediaplayer.swf?media=http:\/\/broadcast.lds.org\/newsroom\/video\/flv\/bednar_edit02_150k.flv&amp;type=FLV\" target=\"_blank\">tyranny of tolerance<\/a>,&#8221; as Elder Bednar calls it.\u00a0 Instead of tolerance, proponents of &#8220;same-sex marriages&#8221; are demanding endorsement.\u00a0 If &#8220;same-sex marriages&#8221; are allowed in California, the lawsuits will multiply against religious organizations that morally disagree with homosexuality.\u00a0 Some religions will be threatened with the loss of their tax-exempt status because they are considered &#8220;discriminating.&#8221;\u00a0 Organizations and individuals who try to act on their moral convictions in relevant cases could be censured, fined, or forced to shut down.\u00a0 This is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=91486191\" target=\"_blank\">already happening all over the country<\/a>.\u00a0 I realize that these lawsuits are likely to increase whether or not we pass Prop 8, but this amendment would give religious\/moral organizations a more defensible position in the face of such attacks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Same-Sex Partners raising Children<\/strong>:\u00a0 It is currently very rare for a child to be raised by a homosexual couple, but if Proposition 8 fails, it is likely to become more common.\u00a0 What will happen to these children?\u00a0 Which parent doesn&#8217;t matter &#8211; a Mom or a Dad?\u00a0 The Church&#8217;s publication, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.lds.org\/ldsnewsroom\/eng\/commentary\/the-divine-institution-of-marriage\" target=\"_blank\">The Divine Institution of Marriage<\/a>&#8221; states that, &#8220;The             legalization of same-sex marriage likely will erode the             social identity, gender development, and moral character of             children.
